What is Intlpak's Food Nylon thermoforming film, and what is it used for?

It is a co-extruded nylon/PE (NY/PE) film for continuous automatic vacuum thermoforming — the process where a bottom web is heated and formed into a cavity that holds the product, then sealed under vacuum to a top web. It is used to vacuum-pack fresh and processed proteins: beef, chicken, pork, seafood, ham, sausage, bacon, and duck. The nylon layer supplies formability, toughness, and pinhole resistance; laminated with PET or OPP it completes a full vacuum bag.

What is the difference between the NL series and the NY/RCPP series?

The NL series (NY/PE) is for standard ambient, chilled, and frozen vacuum packaging. The NY/RCPP series (F2235, F2237) adds a retort CPP sealant layer so a formed pack can undergo high-temperature retort sterilization and sous-vide cooking — capabilities standard NL film is not designed for. Choose NL for cold-chain vacuum packs; choose NY/RCPP when the pack will be thermally sterilized or sous-vide cooked.

What thicknesses and forming depths are available?

The NL series scales from a sealing film up to deep-draw forming webs: F2646 (NL #50, 50μm, sealing/top web, haze 4%); F2624 (NL #80, 80μm, 10–15mm, 5.7%); F2615 (NL #120, 120μm, 10–30mm, 10%); F2606 (NL #150, 150μm, 40–50mm, 12.5%); F2647 (NL #180, 180μm, 60–70mm, 15%); 15309 (NL #262, 262μm, 60–100mm, 20%). The NY/RCPP grades are F2235 (135μm, 30–50mm) and F2237 (150μm, 30–50mm), haze on request. Width and length are customized; deeper cavities need heavier gauges.

Which grade is a forming (bottom) web and which is a sealing (top) web?

F2646 (50μm) is a sealing film — a top web with no forming depth, run against a formed bottom web. The 80–262μm NL grades and both NY/RCPP grades are forming (bottom) webs, each carrying a recommended forming depth. If you need a formed cavity, start at F2624 (80μm, 10–15mm); if you need a clear top web, F2646 is the choice.

Why does formability and pinhole resistance matter, and how does haze change with gauge?

A forming web is stretched into a cavity; poor formability thins or cracks the film and produces pinholes that break the vacuum. Intlpak's nylon films are engineered for best formability and resistance to twists without pinholes. Clarity trades off with gauge: haze rises from 4% at 50μm to 20% at 262μm, so the thin grades read clearest at retail and the thick grades prioritize deep-draw strength.

How strong are the films — do thicker gauges add much strength?

Machine-direction break strength is already high at low gauge: F2646 (50μm) breaks around 450/380 kg/cm² and F2624 (80μm) around 460/470 — effectively level in MD. Added gauge mainly buys cross-direction tear resistance, deeper draw capability, and cavity rigidity rather than a big jump in MD strength. Elongation rises with gauge (F2646 ~370/440% up to F2647 ~620/600%), so heavier grades tolerate deeper forming.

Do these films provide the oxygen barrier themselves?

The nylon layer gives good gas barrier and toughness, but for a high oxygen barrier the film is laminated with PET or OPP (or paired with an EVOH structure). Intlpak does not publish an OTR figure for this line — it is a formability/clarity/toughness play, with barrier completed in the laminate. For a defined oxygen barrier, ask about the NY/EVOH barrier film or an EVOH lamination.

What makes F2235 and F2237 "retort-grade"?

They carry an RCPP (retort cast polypropylene) sealant layer developed for retort service, so a formed and sealed pack can go directly into high-temperature retort sterilization — and is also suitable for sous-vide cooking — while still serving ambient, chilled, and frozen distribution. Both form at 30–50mm. Standard NL film cannot take retort; the NY/RCPP grades F2235 and F2237 are the ones that can.

F2235 vs F2237 — how do I choose?

Both form 30–50mm; the difference is material margin and rigidity, not extra depth. F2235 is 135μm; F2237 is 150μm for heavier contents, sharper product geometry, or where the tray must hold its shape. For ordinary prepared foods, F2235 does the job at lower material cost.

If I'm not sterilizing, should I still use NY/RCPP?

Usually no. Chilled or frozen vacuum packs need no retort layer, and a standard nylon grade such as F2606 (150μm, 40–50mm) costs less and reads clearer. The value of NY/RCPP is the ability to sterilize or sous-vide after forming — if you never do, there's no reason to pay for it.

What products are these films used to pack?

Vacuum packs of fresh and processed protein: beef, pork, chicken, seafood, plus ham, sausage, bacon, and duck, across ambient (retort), refrigerated, and frozen distribution. The NY/RCPP grades extend this to retort ready meals and sous-vide dishes. The film's toughness resists punctures from bone-in or sharp products and helps protect against freezer burn.

Are these the same as the medical nylon thermoforming films?

They share the nylon forming technology but are a different line. The Food Package nylon films (F2624, etc., no "-M") are optimized for food vacuum packaging; the Medical Care Package nylon films (F2624-M, etc.) are specified for E.O./gamma-sterilizable medical device trays. Match the line to your application.

Forming film vs pre-made pouch — which route?

A forming film is thermoformed inline into a custom cavity on a TFFS machine — efficient at volume and for product-shaped cavities. A pre-made pouch is a ready bag for low volumes or irregular items. This line is the forming/sealing rollstock route for automatic vacuum lines.

NY/PE vs NY/EVOH — when do I need the EVOH version?

NY/PE (this line) delivers toughness, formability, and a good gas barrier for typical vacuum shelf life. When you need a defined high oxygen barrier for long MAP shelf life, step up to the NY/EVOH barrier film, which adds an EVOH core. The choice is driven by required shelf life and whether you're running MAP.

They are produced as food-safety-compliant films and are inherently BPA free (BPA relates to polycarbonate/epoxy chemistry, not nylon or PE).
