What is an easy peel film, and what does Intlpak's easy peel line do?

An easy peel film — also called a peelable film, peel seal film or easy open film — is a sealant film engineered so the pack opens with a smooth, controlled pull instead of tearing or cutting. Intlpak's easy peel line is a family of five E.O.RCPP grades: retort-grade, peelable heat-seal films for rigid PP containers. After lamination the film delivers an easy peel seal that stays airtight through pressurized high-temperature sterilization (resistant to 130°C), then opens cleanly for the end user. Three grades — F4531, F45A5 and F45A7 — serve retort food containers; two — F4568 and F4569 — serve contact lens containers.

The line has five grades in two families — how do I choose?

Start from what you are sealing. The retort food familyF4531 (E.O.RCPP #30, 30μm), F45A5 (#50, 50μm) and F45A7 (#70, 70μm) — is the sealant web of easy open lid material for high-temperature processed food containers: trays, cups and bowls. The contact lens familyF4568 (#35, 35μm) and F4569 (#50, 50μm) — is the sealant web of contact lens lidding, the foil lid peeled off a lens blister before wearing a lens. Both families share the same E.O.RCPP peel technology, the same 130°C heat resistance and the same PET // AL // ONY // EO-RCPP laminate; the end use and the gauge are what separate them.

What is RCPP film, and how is it different from ordinary CPP film?

CPP (cast polypropylene) is a polypropylene film produced by cast extrusion, valued for clarity, heat resistance and sealability. RCPP film — retort CPP film — is a retortable grade of CPP engineered to survive retort processing without losing seal performance. Intlpak's E.O.RCPP series goes one step further: it is an easy peel CPP film, meaning the sealant layer is formulated for a peelable seal rather than a permanent weld. So while a standard PP or generic CPP film may seal well, an easy peel RCPP film gives you retort survivability and easy-open performance in one heat seal film.

Is the film monolayer or co-extruded?

Every grade is co-extruded — a multilayer film produced by computer-controlled multi-layer coextrusion, not a simple monolayer sealant. That construction lets Intlpak dedicate one layer to peel control and another to the product-contact surface, while the heat seal layer bonds reliably to PP containers. Engineering peel force and seal strength independently is exactly what a monolayer sealant cannot do. The film ships as rollstock for laminators and converters, and a corona treated surface can be supplied where the laminate needs enhanced adhesion.

What thicknesses are available?

Five standard gauges. For retort food: F4531 (E.O.RCPP #30) at 30μm for lighter lidding laminates, F45A5 (#50) at 50μm for general-purpose retort lidding, and F45A7 (#70) at 70μm for heavier-duty lids and larger trays. For contact lens: F4568 (#35) at 35μm for standard lens blister lidding, and F4569 (#50) at 50μm for heavier lidding and larger or multi-cavity formats. A 35 micron specification maps directly to F4568; in the retort food family F4531 at 30μm is the nearest gauge. Width and length are customized to your slitting and lamination requirements.

Does peel strength change after sterilization?

"Seal strength changes after sterilization" is one of the most common failure complaints in retort lidding — a lid that peeled nicely before the retort becomes impossible to open afterwards, and the same problem appears as a lens blister that welds shut in the autoclave. The E.O.RCPP series is engineered for consistent peel strength and stable seal strength: heat-sealing tension is stable, with little difference before and after sterilization. That means the peel strength you qualify on the bench is the peel strength your consumer experiences after the cycle. For engineers specifying a peel strength film for retort packaging, this before/after stability is the defining spec of the series.

What is the heat seal window, and why does it matter?

Every grade offers a wide heat seal window — a heat-sealing interval above 30°C. A wide window forgives the normal temperature drift of production tray sealer, cup sealer and lens filling lines: the line can run slightly hot or cold and still produce a controlled peel with full seal integrity. A narrow window is the usual answer to "why does my lid film seal too tight" — small overshoots in seal temperature push a peelable seal toward a permanent weld. If you want packaging that is easier to open without re-engineering the line, switching to a wide-window easy peel sealant is usually the simplest fix.

Is the seal airtight and leak-proof? What about tamper evidence?

Yes. The film is designed to be both airtight and easy-open: it forms a hermetic seal that functions as a leak proof seal through sterilization and distribution, and in lens packaging it retains the saline and maintains the sterile barrier until the user peels it. A properly sealed easy peel lid also acts as a tamper evident seal — once peeled, the opened seal bead is visibly disturbed, so tampering cannot be concealed. Burst strength and seal integrity should still be verified on your specific container during qualification; Intlpak supports customers with sealing-condition guidance during trials.

Does the film peel cleanly, without tearing or residue?

Clean opening is the heart of the product. The peelable seal is engineered for a clean, residue-free peel — a seal that opens without leaving residue on the container flange, and without tearing. Two of the most common complaints about incumbent lidding, a foil lid that tears when peeling and a blister pack that is hard to open, are exactly what a controlled easy peel seal eliminates.

What about hot tack, contamination at the seal area, and other line realities?

Real production lines are imperfect: sauces splash onto flanges and packs are moved before seals fully cool. Hot tack strength (the seal's strength while still hot) and the ability to seal through contamination are therefore practical concerns for any high-speed operation. Seal-through-contamination performance depends on the product, seal profile and tooling, so Intlpak recommends validating with your actual fill. What sterilization processes can the film withstand?

All five grades are built for pressurized sterilization — pressurized high-temperature sterilization in a retort or autoclave — with heat resistance up to 130°C. That covers standard retort processing and retort sterilization at 121°C as well as high-temperature cycles up to 130°C. Whether your process spec reads "autoclave sterilization", "steam sterilization packaging" or "thermal processing packaging", the E.O.RCPP series is built as a heat resistant film for exactly these conditions, and post-cycle seal stability is its second headline property.

Can retorted packs be stored at room temperature?

Yes — that is the point of retort. Correctly retorted packs with intact seals are shelf stable: commercially sterile packs suited to ambient shelf life and room-temperature storage without refrigeration. This is why retort trays and pouches sealed with easy peel RCPP film serve as a canned food alternative and enable long shelf life food programmes. Actual shelf life depends on your full laminate barrier (foil or other high-barrier structures), fill process and validation — Intlpak can advise on structure selection for your target shelf life.

Does it work for hot fill, pasteurization or boil-in-bag?

Applications below retort temperatures are generally comfortable for a film rated to 130°C, so hot fill and pasteurization leave ample headroom. Boil-in-bag is a related but distinct category: a retort film must survive pressurized sterilization at 121–130°C, while boil-in-bag only faces roughly 100°C boiling water. Using a true retort film for boil-in-bag gives extra safety margin; the reverse does not work.

How is the film used in a finished lid, and what laminate structure is typical?

The film is the inner sealant web of a lidding laminate. The recommended structure across all five grades is PET 12μm // AL 9μm // ONY 15μm // EO-RCPP — a four-layer laminate of PET print web, aluminium foil barrier, a nylon (ONY) puncture-resistant layer and the easy peel sealant. This PET/foil/nylon laminate is the classic aluminium foil lidding construction for retort trays and for lens blisters alike: the foil provides light and moisture barrier, the ONY layer adds puncture toughness, and the E.O.RCPP layer provides the heat seal and the peel. After lamination the web is converted into top web film for inline sealing or supplied as a die-cut lid.

Our current foil lid is hard to open. Is this the alternative?

Yes — this is the most common conversion story. A conventional welded lid needs high force, often tears partially and splashes the contents. Replacing the sealant web with Intlpak's easy peel film keeps your barrier and print webs unchanged while transforming opening behaviour: packaging that opens without tearing, with an easy open seal your consumers will notice. If your search was literally "alternative to a hard-to-open foil lid", the answer is to re-specify the sealant layer, not the whole lid.

Which containers does the film seal to?

The series is formulated for PP packaging containers. In food it seals as a PP tray lid, cup lid and general container lid — lidding film for trays, cups, bowls, tubs and pots, any rigid polypropylene vessel used for high-temperature food packaging. In lens packaging it seals as a PP contact lens container lid on polypropylene blisters, cups and vials. Can it run on standard tray and cup sealing machines?

Yes. As a plastic tray sealing film and plastic cup sealing film, the laminated lid web runs on conventional tray sealer and cup sealer equipment, inline or with die-cut lids. The workflow is simple: choose a rigid PP container, laminate the E.O.RCPP sealant into your lid web, then heat-seal on a tray or cup sealing machine within the recommended window. Retort food line — applications

What foods is the retort food line typically used to package?

The core application is ready-to-eat food: it serves as a ready meal and prepared food packaging film for retort trays and bowls. Typical uses include meal tray lidding for rice and pasta trays, instant food packaging such as instant rice, instant noodle soup components, and curry programmes where a peelable lid tops the tray format. Because the film is the food contact layer, food-grade safety and hygiene compliance is built into Intlpak's clean-room production standard.

Can it be used for soups, sauces and other liquid foods?

Yes. For soups, broths and sauces the requirement profile is identical — a liquid food packaging film must deliver a leak proof, hermetic seal through retort, plus an easy peel that does not splash the contents on opening. The stable peel of the E.O.RCPP series after sterilization is particularly valuable for liquid products, where a stuck lid usually means spilled product.

Is it suitable for meat and seafood?

Retort meat packaging and retort seafood packaging are classic uses for retort lidding: shelf stable meat in trays offers a modern replacement for cans, and the same sealant technology supports retort pouch formats. F45A7 at 70μm is often preferred for these heavier, higher-value fills where extra sealant gauge adds robustness.

What about pet food?

Wet pet food packaging is one of the fastest-growing retort categories. The film serves as a pet food packaging film in tray format — a pet food tray film with peelable foil lidding — and the same technology family supports pouch lidding concepts. For brands developing cat food or dog food programmes in tray format, easy opening is a genuine purchase driver: pet owners open these packs daily.

Can it be used for baby food and health food?

Is the sealed pack microwaveable?

PP containers and PP-based sealant films are inherently well suited to reheating, which is why this film family appears in microwave meal packaging and as a microwave bowl lid film. Consumers typically peel the lid fully or partially before microwaving. Contact lens line

What is Easy Peel Film for Contact Lens used for?

It is the heat seal layer of lid material for contact lens containers. F4568 (35μm) and F4569 (50μm) are laminated into a contact lens lidding film: the familiar foil lid you peel off a lens blister before wearing a lens. The film seals the container airtight, survives pressurized high-temperature sterilization at up to 130°C, then peels open smoothly for the end user. In industry shorthand it serves as a contact lens blister film, pack seal film and case sealing film in one product family.

Why does my lens blister seal fail after sterilization?

This is the classic pain point in lens packaging development: many sealant films change character in the autoclave, either welding shut or losing seal integrity. The E.O.RCPP series is engineered for stable peel strength after sterilization — heat-sealing tension shows little difference before and after the autoclave cycle. That minimal peel variation, together with consistent heat seal tension across the web, means the peel strength you validate on the bench is what the production pack delivers.

Which package formats does it cover — blister, case, cup, tray or vial?

All of the peel-lid formats used in the lens industry. As a contact lens blister lidding film it seals the blister pack, including the daily disposable lens blister lid; it also seals the case lid and cup lid of reusable-lens formats, the tray lid of multi-cavity packs, and the single dose lens vial lid. The same sealant web serves each format; what changes is the lamination, die-cutting and sealing tooling on your side.

Which contact lens categories is the film used for?

Every category that ships in a peel-open sterile pack. Daily disposable contact lens packaging is the largest volume driver — billions of blisters per year — followed by monthly lenses and other replacement schedules in soft contact lens blister packaging. The film equally serves RGP (rigid gas permeable), toric and multifocal lens packaging, as well as the fast-growing colored / cosmetic contact lens segment, where shelf appeal makes the printed foil lid part of the brand experience. The sealant itself is category-agnostic: if the lens ships wet in a PP container under an autoclaved foil lid, the E.O.RCPP series applies.

Are there applications beyond contact lenses?

Yes. Easy peel film vs heat seal film — aren't they the same thing?

Every easy peel film is a heat seal film, but not every heat seal film peels. The comparison is really about failure mode: a weld (permanent) seal is stronger than the film itself, so opening requires cutting or tearing; a peelable seal is engineered to fail at the seal interface at a controlled force, giving a clean peel. For retort food lids and lens blisters alike, the permanent-seal approach is why some packs are nearly impossible to open — and the peelable approach is why the E.O.RCPP series exists.

CPP film vs PE film — why polypropylene for retort?

The short answer is temperature. PE sealants soften far below retort conditions, while cast polypropylene keeps its integrity through 121–130°C sterilization. That is why retort lidding and retort pouches are built on CPP/RCPP sealants and why PE-based lidding stays in the chilled and ambient non-retort space. If your process retorts, you need the PP family; if it never exceeds pasteurization, PE may suffice.

Foil lid vs peelable film — is that even the right comparison?

It is a common but slightly misleading comparison: the two are not competitors but layers of the same laminate. The aluminium foil provides barrier and deadfold; the peelable film provides the heat seal and the easy-open peel. A foil lid without a peelable sealant is a tear-prone, hard-to-open lid; a peelable sealant without foil lacks barrier. The commercial answer is the laminate — foil for protection, E.O.RCPP for the peel.

Heat seal lid vs press-fit lid — why do sterile lens packs heat-seal?

In sterile packaging the comparison ends quickly: a press-fit or snap lid is not a validated sterile barrier — it cannot guarantee a hermetic, tamper-evident closure through autoclaving and distribution. A heat-sealed peelable lid provides a quantifiable, testable seal (peel strength, burst, dye penetration) that supports sterility claims, while still opening easily. That is why every mainstream lens blister on the market is heat-sealed with a peelable film.

Contact lens blister vs vial packaging — which should we choose?

This is a format decision upstream of the film. Blisters win on cost, filling speed and footprint, which is why daily disposables are exclusively blister-packed; vials suit specialty, RGP and made-to-order lenses where a resealable or more robust container is wanted. The good news for packaging development: both formats can use the same peelable lidding technology, so the choice does not lock you out of an easy-open seal.

Does the film comply with ISO 11607 for sterile barrier systems?

ISO 11607 governs the finished, validated package, not a film in isolation — no film supplier can honestly sell you "ISO 11607 compliant packaging" off a roll.
